Dangerous DiHydrogen Monoxide called pervasive, pernicious threat

By permission of Natural Grocers

A friend recently sent us a write-up about a junior high school student who won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair.

DiHydrogen Monoxide: dangerous scourge of the human race must be controlled!
For his project, he asked people to sign a petition demanding stern regulation and possibly even a total ban of an unregulatedand highly destructive chemical calledDiHydrogen Monoxide.

The Eagle Rock Junior High student listed reasons why the chemical needed strict controls...

1) It can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2) It is a major component in acid rain.
3) It can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4) Accidental inhalation can kill you
5) It contributes to erosion
6) It decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7) It has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
8) It is associated with food borne illnesses and disease epidemics.

Out of 50 people, 43 signed the petition. Six were undecided.
Importantly, only one person said "no". Apparently he had paid attention in chemistry class, so he knew that dihydrogen monoxide is the chemical name for water.

How easy is it to conduct a study that pulls the wool over just about everyone's eyes?

It's THAT easy to twist anything into a piece of propaganda.  Don't be hoodwinked. There is always an agenda behind science and the scientist, so know what the intent of the study is and whether the results -- especially as they are interpreted in the short media blurbs -- are really supported or not.  Lobbyists, government agencies, and consumer organizations can use distorted facts, selective facts, and fear mongering to get your attention and make you act on their behalf.  The truth is you can understand the science and logic behind these kinds of conclusions and calls for action.  Need help?  Send us a question today!

Thanks to HSI Research for bringing this frightening substance to our attention!
